Description

The first mid-engine sports car from BMW appeared in 1978. At that time, BMW invited the struggling company Lamborghini to construct parts, which did not succeed, and the first M1s were built by Lamborghini wasn’t even a success. Because Lamborghini was spinning economically, Marchesi then welded the tubular space frames, T.I.R. made the plastic body from GRP. Italdesign already had experience with the discontinued production of the Maserati Bora (also a mid-engine sports car) and as a result now assembled the bodies on the frames and transported the finished bodies to Baur in Stuttgart. Motorsport GmbH, founded especially for the M1, supplied the engines there and ZF the drive. Baur then completed this M1, a civilized racing car for the road. Obstetricians were Jochen Nerpasch and BMW engine guru Paul Rosche. Without a doubt, the M1 is still an icon of BMW sports cars today, which was certainly also due to the BMW Procar racing series created especially for it, which took place in 1979 and 1980 before the Formula 1 races. The famous F1 drivers like Niki Lauda 1979 and Nelson Piquet 1980 each achieved the overall victory. Flat, wide, wedge-shaped were the optical ingredients, two overhead camshafts, a 3.5 liter 6 cylinder four-valve engine (a sensation at the time) with 277 hp, 5-speed ZF transmission and mid-engine concept, the technical ingredients for this BMW legend.
Our BMW M1 was in sensible collector's hands from the start. Via the first delivery in Switzerland, it got to a German owner, then to England, and finally ended up back in Germany with a renowned BMW collector. The current owner has now commissioned us to sell his vehicle. This M1 was serviced by specialists throughout its life, in England it was once again very thinly repainted in its original color. The sensitive GRP parts have made repainting inevitable. The highlights of the maintenance in recent years were, among other things, a new control unit, overhaul of the ZF transmission, as well as overhaul of brake systems including new discs and pads. The odometer reads just over 11,000 KM, which can be considered authentic due to the mint condition of the interior and the engine. Unfortunately, there is no stamped service book, but some invoices for the work carried out over the last 20 years can also be traced on the basis of the mileage. Conclusion: A real collector's item from BMW, of which only 453 pieces were built.
The mileage is read and we cannot guarantee the actual mileage.
