Z1 was produced from July 1988 to June 1991. Direct descendent of the BMW 507, it inaugurates the line of prestigious roadsters "Z" (Z is "Zuken" which means "future" in German. The Z3 and the Z4 will follow, declined until today in 3 successive generations. The Z1 was unveiled at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show and released in 1988. Equipped with the 325i E30 engine, it remains the model introducing numerous innovations in the range, including the integration of composite materials, retractable doors, and ABS. However, this model will remain exclusive because of its high price. The rigidity of his chassis and his handling were unusual, he has no chance of competing with many of the current roadsters. Its price had two consequences: it was replaced by the more conventional and therefore cheaper Z3. On the other hand it is ardently sought by collectors, because only 8,012 copies were manufactured until 1991, including 12 prototypes produced between 1986 and 1987.
