Description

My beloved Delia is a rare partially restored 1924 Delage DI 4 seater tourer. The project started 40 years ago when we collected bits of Delage DI from around NZ starting with a rotting carcase in a farm paddock. It is a DI with a restored alloy motor that has been enlarged to 2.7 L. The mechanics and body stage are now complete. It has a boat tail with a wooden mahogany finish. The body was originally built in Christchurch in 1979 and eventually we bought it from a Napier enthusiast who wanted to rebody her Delage. This is not a Colonial series, but a true Delage DI compiled from parts scattered around the countryside in various stages of disrepair. The Delage was a popular farm car as it was built for racing use and could stand up to the rugged rural NZ roads. The original car would have been shipped to NZ as a running chassis and a local carriage works would have built up the car for the buyer. Along with the motor, the gearbox has also been rebuilt and a new brakes system (original design) mounted. Delia is now at a crossroads. She can now be turned into a touring car, a racing car or a show car. Delage was a famous racing marque coming in 2nd and 3rd in the French Grand Prix in Lyon in 1924 and winning it in 1925. It won 3 more French races in 1927. It is time to sell her and let the next owner make that decision. There are several spare parts including block #147 and crank #1221. The next part of the restoration will involve a new electric system, proper gauges and lights, horn etc., renovating the interior, setting up the two windshields, final painting and striping, completing the dashboard and adding the bits and pieces needed for its next use including a new hood if needed. The car is located at a showroom in Christchurch NZ and can be easily exported through the port of Lyttleton. The Vin number has yet to be registered as it depends on where the car is finally completed.
