In January 1956, DeSoto announced that it had been chosen to run the 1956 Indianapolis 500 Race, and the Fireflite convertible was selected as the official Pace Car. The Pace Car featured special interior and exterior finishes and was equipped with a 330 cu-in Hemi V8 engine producing 256 horsepower. The car also boasted a heavy-duty transmission and stiffer suspension for enhanced performance, enabling it to reach a top speed of 230 km/h.

Although accurate production records are unavailable due to the Pace Car not being designated as a separate model, it is estimated that less than 400 were produced. Today, it is believed that only about 35 of these cars exist worldwide.

The paintwork on this DeSoto Pace Car is in excellent condition, and the chrome accents have a deep shine. The interior features gold vinyl upholstery with brown fabric inserts, which is in remarkably good condition and nearly as good as new. Under the hood, the 5.4-liter V8 engine runs well, and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly.
