Description

The 1989 Dodge Daytona Shelby Turbo II is part of the final generation of Chrysler L-body sports coupes introduced in the early 1980s. The Daytona was developed as a compact front-wheel-drive hatchback and coupe, offering Dodge a modern, aerodynamic alternative within the American mid-size and sports car segments. The Shelby versions were the sportiest variants, developed in collaboration with Carroll Shelby, who was involved in several performance-oriented Chrysler products during this period.

The Dodge Daytona Shelby Turbo II debuted at a time when turbocharging was a key technology for boosting the performance of relatively compact engines. The Turbo II versions were higher-performance variants within the lineup, positioned above the standard Daytona models. The combination of front-wheel drive, turbocharging, and a coupe body style aligned with late 1980s market trends, when compact sports models became well established. In 1989, Dodge produced 69,998 units of the Daytona series. Total production of the Daytona Shelby amounted to 4,741 units, of which 3,444 were equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Within those figures, the 1989 Dodge Daytona Shelby Turbo II holds a special place as one of the more distinctive versions. Shelby-badged Daytonas were not based solely on appearance but were intended as technically and dynamically superior variants within the lineup. This model is a representative example of late 1980s American turbo coupes, with a clear link to the Shelby tradition within Chrysler.

The 1989 Dodge Daytona Shelby Turbo II features the Daytona platform combined with Turbo II specifications and Shelby branding, making it one of the sportiest variants. The example offered here is in original, roadworthy condition. The 5-speed manual transmission version is among the more engaging configurations and aligns with the limited production of such cars within the Daytona Shelby series.

This model reflects Chrysler’s technical approach during this period, combining a compact size, turbo technology, and sporty tuning. Although the Daytona Shelby Turbo II was produced in significant numbers in 1989, it remains relatively scarce, giving it a unique place in Daytona’s production history.
