Capots Vintage, specialists in sports and classic vehicles in Lyon, France, are offering for sale a 1959 Facel Vega HK500 :
Presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1958 and designed under the supervision of Jean Daninos, founder of the marque, it perfectly embodies the refinement and performance of its era. Its name reflects its remarkable weight-to-power ratio of 5 kilograms per horsepower, delivered by a Chrysler V8 5.9-liter engine producing 360 hp. The car stands out for its impressive performance, with a top speed exceeding 230 km/h, while offering exceptional comfort. Very first Facel Vega equipped with Dunlop disc brakes on all four wheels, this model harmoniously blends power, technology, and luxury, remaining one of the fastest four-seater coupes of its time.
The example we present is a European version, delivered new in 1959 and purchased by its last owner in April 1985, who has now owned it for over 39 years. It features a chalk-colored exterior paired with a Burgundy leather interior and is equipped with a manual gearbox. The bodywork was restored in 2019 and still retains its splendor and excellent condition. The spacious interior is original, showcasing a beautiful patina and comfortable upholstery. The dashboard stands out with its hand-painted wood-effect finish on a thin layer of metal, a testament to the artisanal craftsmanship unique to Facel Vega.
In 2007, significant maintenance was performed on the gearbox, differential, and front axle, including the replacement of bearings and seals as well as the refurbishment of the suspension arms, among other works. In 2009, the engine underwent a complete overhaul, which included resurfacing the engine block and cylinder head, replacing seats and guides, and reconditioning the crankshaft.
More recently, major maintenance was carried out in July 2023, including the removal and refitting of the gearbox, replacement of the clutch release bearing, gearbox output shaft seals, engine sump gaskets, and an ultrasonic cleaning and revision of the carburetors. Additionally, ignition adjustments were made to facilitate starting. The latest maintenance, completed in January 2024, included replacing the brake calipers, fitting an electric fuel pump, and repairing and reinstalling various electrical components, among other tasks. The total cost of these two interventions amounts to €26,000, with invoices available for review.
With the documentation we hold, we can confirm only two owners since 1966.
