This Fiat 850 Bertone Berlinetta Racer is an old acquaintance of ours: several years ago we sold exactly this Bertone Racer to Guus van Eijk. Both definitely need an introduction. The Fiat 850 Bertone Berlinetta Racer is a beautiful coupé which is based on the Fiat 850 Spider. This is quite special, usually the convertible version is developed from a coupé base. This Bertone was delivered new in America and came to the Netherlands via a Belgian collector. Of the number of Bertone Berlinetta Racers produced, only 2890 were made in this version, making the Fiat now rare and exclusive.Guus is the owner of Autobedrijf Guus van Eijk and a specialist in the field of maintenance, repair, overhaul and restoration of Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati. Customers with special Italian cars know how to find Guus' company. These customers usually have more cars’s and a diversity of brands in their collection. So it comes that Guus is also sure to excellently serve the customer with a British aristocrat such as an Aston Martin or a Bentley, or a lover of German sports cars’s such as a Porsche. In this role, therefore, we have known Guus and his team for many years. The Fiat 850 that is now here to shine we sold to Guus some years ago. The car was then painted in dark blue and had the familiar extra chrome brackets on the bumpers. The car was in decent condition but was certainly not perfect. Guus came to look at the Bertone and the deal was quickly done. We predicted Guus, because by now we had known each other for a while, that he was going to give the car a complete makeover. Guus was certainly not sure about that at the time…Guus soon found out that the original color of the Bertone was not dark blue but had been orange, specifically the color that was also used on the Lamborghini Miura. In his restoration studio, the car was closely examined, plans were made for a technical update and the decision was made to give the car back its special color. So it became a rather comprehensive restoration after all…Guus: “At Bertone, exclusive cars’were built like the Lamborghini’s and it seemed appropriate to use the color Arancio Miura (Orange) so that the Bertone Berlinetta Racer would reappear in its original color. The names Bertone used for the paint colors stem from the period when various Lamborghini’s were built at Bertone. What is nice is that Bertone used parts in production for different models, for example, the door handles, headlights and seats from the Lamborghini Miura were also available for the Bertone Berlinetta Racer. I have fitted the period correct Miura lookalike wheels and painted them in gold as for a Miura, very carefully you could say that my Bertone Berlinetta Racer is now the little brother of the Miura.”In the interior the Miura theme has been carried through and the original Miura upholstery has been used. Many improvements have also been made to the bodywork. For example, both bumpers have been replaced, as well as the windshield, headlights and associated rings, door handles and locks, and all window and door rubbers have been renewed. The brakes were overhauled with the master cylinder, pads and brake hoses replaced. Four new tires have been mounted on the Miura lookalike rims already mentionedThe engine has also been thoroughly overhauled, with the head gasket, valve seals, timing chain, and all retaining rings and gaskets replaced. The bearing work and pistons were inspected and the carburetor was overhauled. Of the cooling and heating system, the engine radiator, the heater radiator, the water pump and all water hoses were replaced. The gearbox also received attention where the shaft sleeves of the box and the clutch were replaced.
