This Fiat 850 Bertone Berlinetta Racer is a rare and exclusive model, with only 2,890 units produced in this configuration. Originally delivered new in the United States, it later made its way to the Netherlands via a Belgian collector.
The car is based on the Fiat 850 Spider, which is unusual since the convertible version is typically developed from a coupé. The Bertone Berlinetta Racer features distinctive styling and a unique history.
A few years ago, we sold this same Bertone Racer to Guus van Eijk, owner of Autobedrijf Guus van Eijk, a specialist in maintenance, repair, overhaul, and restoration of Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and Maseratis. His workshop also services British luxury cars like Aston Martins and Bentleys, as well as German sports cars such as Porsches.
When Guus acquired the car, it was painted dark blue with chrome bumper bars and was in decent but not perfect condition. During restoration, Guus discovered that the original color was actually orange, specifically Arancio Miura, the same shade used on Lamborghini Miuras. The restoration process was extensive, involving technical updates and a return to its original, distinctive color.
Guus chose to restore the car in its original Lamborghini Miura-inspired color, reflecting Bertone's use of parts from various Lamborghini models, including door handles, headlights, and seats. The wheels were replaced with period-correct Miura-style rims painted gold, giving the car a look reminiscent of a Miura’s little brother.
The interior was restored with original Miura upholstery, maintaining the theme throughout. Numerous bodywork improvements were made, including replacing both bumpers, the windshield, headlights and bezels, door handles, locks, and renewing all window and door seals.
The brakes were overhauled with new master cylinder, brake pads, and brake lines. The engine received a thorough overhaul, with new head gasket, valve seals, timing chain, oil seals, and gaskets. Bearings and pistons were inspected, and the carburetor was rebuilt. Cooling and heating systems were upgraded with a new radiator, heater core, water pump, and water hoses.
The transmission was serviced, with new boots for the transmission and clutch shaft. Lower control arm bushings, wheel bearings, and the fuel tank (treated to prevent rust) were also replaced.
This car combines rarity, history, and meticulous restoration, making it a unique and desirable collector's item.
