It was a modest car in terms of technology and performance, priced at 8,900 lire, well above the estimated 5,000 lire and about twenty times the average salary of a skilled worker -- Thanks to the "Italians' hunger for cars," the Fiat 500 still managed to achieve moderate success. In 1936, there were only 222,000 vehicles (of all types, including public and military) in Italy for over 42 million inhabitants, or one vehicle for every 200 people. This was ten times less than in France and forty times less than in the United States in the same year, which is why many Italians were particularly eager to buy the new cars.
