Description

The Ford Escort Mk1 debuted in the late 1960s as a compact family car and quickly became an important platform for sports car use. Its simple construction, low weight, and favorable weight distribution made the Escort particularly well-suited for rallying. In motorsports, the model became a mainstay in national and international rallies, with the rear-wheel-drive version remaining popular due to its responsive handling and versatility on various surfaces.

By 1974, the Ford Escort Mk1 had established a solid reputation, even though factory production in Europe had shifted to the Mk2. Well-prepared Mk1 examples gained a special status in the rally world. The body of the Ford Escort Mk1 Rally in its widebody configuration continues this tradition of extensive competition preparation, with the car’s foundation tailored for demanding use and specific racing conditions.

This Ford Escort Mk1 has been converted into a rally car. It features a widebody steel body and professional rally equipment. The car has been meticulously prepared for rallying, equipped with a comprehensive roll cage and disc brakes all around. The underbody is finished in green, with fuel and brake lines routed inside for safety. It includes a central fire suppression system, a modified fuel system, and a works-type fuel tank.

The mechanical components have been upgraded for demanding rallies. The Burton inline-four engine is fitted with steel connecting rods, forged pistons, and 48” twin Webers. The powertrain is paired with a Quaife HD five-speed transmission, including a mount shaft and BTS clutch. The rear axle has been reinforced and an Oka Limited Slip Differential installed. Controls include an adjustable pedal box and a hydraulic parking brake. Cooling is provided by an aluminum radiator.

The driver and navigator sit in Sparco Pro 2000 rally seats with four-point harnesses. The car also includes a separate bracket for mounting on the hood, equipped with four Wesem halogen spotlights. There is no documented history of the modifications and alterations; the specifications are based on information from the previous owner. The car has a Dutch license plate, but it is unknown whether all modifications were reported to the RDW at the time. Buyers should verify whether registration in their country is possible if exporting the vehicle.
