Description

This 1931 Ford Model 400-A Convertible Sedan, also known as the A400, is a beautifully restored and highly collectible example of one of the most sought-after Model A Fords. Henry Ford gained significant fame in the early 20th century with the Model T, which was highly successful and affordable, making car ownership accessible to the masses. However, by 1926, the Model T's sales began to decline as competitors surpassed its features. Responding to the market, Ford introduced the Model A on December 2, 1927. It boasted modern amenities like a standard shift transmission and 4-wheel brakes, along with a reasonable price that made it a popular choice during the Great Depression. The Model A was initially available in 20 body styles, with more added over time as consumer preferences and production techniques evolved.

The A400, released on May 22, 1931, is especially rare, with fewer than 5,000 units produced. It featured a convertible design that provided covered seating for four, roll-up windows, and came equipped with luxury fittings such as cowl lights, a chrome windshield frame, leather upholstery, and a rear armrest. Under the hood, this Model A400 boasts a 200.5 cubic inch L-head inline 4-cylinder engine paired with a 3-speed manual transmission, producing 40 horsepower when new.

The car's exterior is enhanced with a quail radiator cap, chrome cowl lights for improved nighttime visibility, an ah-ooo-gah horn, and dual sidemounted spare tires with adjustable mirrors. It rides on Tacoma Cream painted wire wheels with whitewall tires and chrome hubcaps. The body is finished in Copra Drab with Chickle Drab reveals and straw pinstripes, while the steel fenders are painted black. A manually operated tan cloth convertible top and a refinished trunk attached with leather straps complete the vintage look.

Inside, the front bucket seats and rear bench are upholstered in Deep Tan Crush Leather, complemented by light beige carpeting, upholstered door panels, a woodgrain dash, and a black steering wheel. The instrument cluster, maintaining its original appearance, includes an 80 MPH speedometer, amp gauge, and fuel gauge.

For enthusiasts looking to own a piece of pre-war automotive history, this 1931 Ford Model 400-A Convertible Sedan is an excellent addition to any classic car collection. Contact Ellingson's at 763-428-7337 for more information.
