The 1929 Ford Model A Phaeton marks an important chapter in Ford's history, when the brand decided to replace the aging Model T with a more modern successor. After Henry Ford stopped production of the Model T in June 1927, production of a car that had been an icon for many years came to an end. The introduction of the Model A ushered in a new era for Ford, with a completely updated design and technical improvements that gave the car much greater driving comfort and performance. Designed under the aesthetic direction of Henry's son Edsel, the new model was an immediate success. People lined up to get a glimpse of this modern car and orders poured in, so many in fact that the factories struggled to meet demand.
This particular Model A Phaeton, built in May 1929, is a great example of an early convertible that perfectly captures the open driving feel of the 1920s. The car was fully restored in a stylish combination of tan with black fenders, brown body details and a canvas hood in matching hue. The interior is done in brown leather, including matching door panels, further enhancing the classic character of the car.
Technical improvements over the Model T made the Model A much more attractive to the general public. The new 200.5 cubic inch engine produced 40 horsepower, which was impressive for the time, especially when combined with the three-speed transmission. The addition of brakes on all four wheels provided a major leap forward in safety.
This Model A Phaeton features a set of wire-spoke wheels in body color, equipped with classic 4.50x21 whitewall tires, which add to the car's authentic look. The car also features nice accessories such as running boards with step plates, a radiator guard and a MotoMeter on the radiator, an accessory popular at the time that indicated the temperature of the coolant. These details make the car not only an engineering marvel, but also an aesthetic pleasure to look at.
This particular Phaeton was once part of the Merrick family collection and was one of four cars that prompted the creation of a museum. The car was officially added to the collection in 1992, but the story began earlier when Rickard Merrick purchased the Model A on the first day of his search for classic cars. The fact that this Ford Model A is a part of such a rich history makes it extra special it is a piece of family heritage that has been carefully preserved.
