Caroll Shelby's cobra will come back to bite at the New York Auto Show with the 2012 GT500 Super Snake, powered by an 800-hp turbocharged V8.
At the upcoming New York Auto Show (April 21-May 1) the new 2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake will make its official debut, a re-edition of the now classic muscle-car made on the basis of the Ford Mustang by Caroll Shelby, which in this new version brings a powerful 800-hp supercharged V8, i.e., the most powerful powertrain ever made by the Texan tuner since the legendary Yenkee sports car was born back in 1965.
Aesthetically, the Super Snake retains the typical stylistic features that have made the fortune of this pony car: oversized air intakes scattered all over the bodywork, the engine hood receives an imposing curvature to accommodate the supercharger, while the even larger wheels house huge 20-inch Alcoa rims, not to mention the legendary livery incattivita by the ever-present blue or white adhesive stripes that run longitudinally over the entire body of the car. The interior of the car while being decidedly sporty, is by no means spartan: the interior has been completely upholstered in leather, while every detail such as floor mats, headrests and steering wheel have superimposed the mythical cobra that reminds us which Yankee legend we are talking about.
Of course, the most interesting part of the car remains the one that hides under the very long front hood. We are talking about the powerful 5.4-liter supercharged V8 that in this 2012 version has reached the incredible power of 800 hp unloaded through a six-speed manual transmission on the rear-wheel drive. Unfortunately, the car's speed performance has not been revealed, but it is not hard to imagine lightning-fast acceleration capable of making the big rear wheels smoke with every press of the accelerator.
The abundant power has been assisted by a new setup and a revised braking system. Adjustable-type shock absorbers have been coupled with shorter, stiffer springs that, together with an all-new stabilizer bar, promise neutral, confident behavior even at higher speeds. To ?harness? the enormous power, the braking system has also been replaced with a higher-performance one featuring huge self-ventilated discs bitten by six-piston calipers.
