Description

1933 Hupmobile K-321 Cabriolet Roadster

Chassis number: 7137

Registration Number: 524UXO

The Hupmobile K-321 Cabriolet Roadster has been referred to as one of the most beautifully designed cars ever made, which is a pretty bold statement; however, it is certainly strikingly attractive. The K-321 was built on a 121-inch wheelbase and powered by a 228cu in straight-six L-head engine rated at 90bhp. Indeed, in 1933, the K-321 was Hupmobile’s most popular model, with around 4600 produced. The car also featured a sloped front grille and the bonnet was lengthened to cover the cowl. Bonnet vent doors, first seen on a larger straight-eight model in 1932, were also incorporated for the straight-six. It was the first complete car design by famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy put into production without changes.

This example is a very very rare survivor (less then 10 known) that was shipped to Australia when new. It was imported by Riverside classics of Scotland who sold it to the last but one owner but one in 2007. It’s fitted with all the period options available, including two side-mounted spare wheels with metal covers, twin trumpet horns, a heater, sun visors and interior mirror with inbuilt clock. The engine was getting quite tired so was replaced with a 1941 Hupmobile 4.1Ltr Skylark Engine (costing approx £8,500). This engine was installed in as new condition, has done few miles & is utterly silent to Rolls Royce standards. This is a powerful & fast car easily running at 60 to 70MPH in modern traffic. It starts instantly from cold.

The car is well restored & very very tidy. The interior is brand new in high quality cognac coloured hide extending also to the dickey seat. The paintwork is also very very tidy in a period cream over brown colour. The hood easily folds down having been cunningly designed to fold almost flat.

The depth of the windscreen is very small for such a large and imposing car, almost looking like it has been chopped, but the view ahead is lofty and commanding. The front bench seat proves extremely comfortable too. The interior of this car has been fully restored, including the faux wooden dashboard which is actually painted metal, but still looks convincing, and every single instrument is in full working order. From the attractive H-styling of the radiator mascot, to the rear-view mirror with clock and amber indicator flashers just below the dashboard and the etched letters HUPP in the rear brake lights, this K-321 Cabriolet Roadster oozes with attention to detail.
