Description

Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos owned the 5000GT in the mid-1960s, which served as the prototype for the car that eventually became "the Mexico". Very coincidentally, John Surtees won the Mexican Grand Prix in a Maserati. Although it is also assumed that one thing belonged to the other... That's how this GT got its appealing name. Thanks to the use of the chassis of the previously presented Quattroporte, the Mexico is a two-door coupe, designed by the Italian Vignale, in which even four adults will find enough space. It was a very expensive GT at the time, so only 480 copies were built, of the first series with 4.7 ltr engine, only 182 copies were produced. The cheaper 4.2ltr version was sold more easily, it can be guessed that the 4.7ltr version is now the most wanted car. There was even a version with automatic transmission. A clean and intact copy of the 4.7 with manual gearbox can therefore really be seen as a rare car. The example offered here was sold new in the USA, eventually came into the hands of a Maserati enthusiast in Denver. He decided to restore the car due to technical overdue maintenance and the beginning of rust. Unfortunately, his poor health forced him not to put the finished car up for sale, so this Mexico found its way to the Netherlands. The engine and gearbox had meanwhile been completely overhauled, the primed body still had to be finished. In the Netherlands, the car was completely finished. A three centimeter thick stack of invoices shows that everything was tackled and almost all parts were renewed. Over a period of two years (2017/2018), the project was worked on almost weekly. Performed by a technician, of course with external help with the painting and upholstery, who enjoys building more than driving. That is why this Mexico is now for sale, for those who want a roadworthy example in top condition, a rare opportunity to buy a very good Mexico 4.7. As a rare option, this Mexico is equipped with a sliding roof. Photos of the restoration as well as all invoices issued in the Netherlands are available.
