Wilhelm Maybach started Maybach Luftfahrzeug Motorenbau in 1909, which laid its foundation in the engines of Zeppelins. They didn’t let go of that ‘spirit’, because we lost two places in the clubhouse, because of that Zeppelin on wheels!

At the beginning of 2000, Maybach was a sleeping brand under the wings of the Daimler branch.
When the demand for luxury ‘land yachts’ increased, a multi-million dollar bluff arose among the German giants who did have an ear for this sport. This is how Bentley ended up at Volkswagen and Rolls-Royce at BMW. Mercedes missed the boat, everyone thought. But Mercedes dusted off Maybach and gave her a big (re)entrance.

This is how the first Maybach 62 was loaded in 2002 in an all-glass body in England on the RMS Queen Elizabeth II (flagship of the Cunard Line), sailing to New York. From there it was flown by helicopter to Wall Street’s Regent hotel. Lavishing in style, isn’t it?

Our Maybach is a 62. The 62 stands (also thanks to AMG) for even more power. We still find that ’62’ quite modest, because it stands for the 5.5 litre V12 twin-turbo with 550 HP and 900 NM. The 900 NM is limited, by the way, to prevent your rear axle from looking like a knuckle after each acceleration! It sprints to 100 in 5.5 seconds and is normally limited to 250 kmh. Of course, ours does not, it just keeps going up to a little over 300!
When you get in, you notice that the Maybach is not made for the left front, but for the right rear. The seats can be compared to those of Qatar when flying first class and they stretch like an (almost) full bed. Do you really need those four climate zones, voice-activated TV, 12 cows(!), sun loungers and the stained glass panoramic roof? Nah. Is it cool? Poh! The ultimate youngtimer! Will we see you soon?
