Mercedes-Benz 180 D W120 “Ponton” 1958
This vehicle is in original condition and features luxury trim, including a radio, two side mirrors, and heating/ventilation. The interior is gray fabric, and the exterior is dark green paint. The car is exempt from vehicle tax and APK (in the Netherlands).
History
This Mercedes-Benz 180 D was a pioneer in diesel and safety innovations. Built in 1958 at the Stuttgart factory, it bears the model number 120.110 and chassis number 8505905. These models, along with others, were nicknamed “Ponton,” referring to their modern body style with integrated fenders, hood, and running boards in a flowing design. In the 1950s and 1960s, diesel versions of the Ponton were highly popular for their long service life and reliability. Many gasoline cars were converted to diesel, making original diesel versions rare today. This example features a luxurious finish. Due to its age, it is exempt from motor vehicle tax and APK in the Netherlands.
Exterior
The car is finished in stylish dark green paint, complemented by extensive chrome trim. The paint and chrome are in fairly original condition, showing normal signs of wear. Rubber seals and lighting are also in good condition. Two new exterior mirrors were installed in 2024. The body panels fit well, indicating a damage-free history.
Interior
The interior has gray fabric upholstery in fairly original condition with normal signs of wear. It offers comfort and luxury for its era. The large steering wheel enhances driving experience. The dashboard is partly black and gray, finished with wood, and features a small clock and a Philips radio. A fire extinguisher is located under the dashboard. The headliner is in good condition. The trunk is enormous, about 75% larger than its predecessor, providing ample space for the spare tire.
Technical
The 180 diesel engine, the OM636, is renowned for its longevity, with odometer readings of 700,000 kilometers common and some certificates awarded for vehicles exceeding one million kilometers. The transmission and drive shafts are also highly reliable, capable of covering over half a million kilometers without overhaul. The brakes, steering, and chassis are robust, contributing to the vehicle’s overall sturdiness. The front suspension features double wishbones with coil springs and a stabilizer bar, while the rear uses swing axles with coil springs. Drum brakes are used on both front and rear. The 4-speed manual transmission operates smoothly, and the car drives and shifts well.
General
After World War II, Mercedes-Benz rebuilt its factories and resumed production of older models like the 170V and 170D. In the 1950s, the brand introduced the Mercedes-Benz 180 W120 with a monocoque body, offering more space and improved safety. The 1956 Mercedes-Benz 190 W121 followed, with enhanced engines and handling. Diesel variants remained popular due to their reliability and long service life. The Ponton models were well received and continuously refined, including with more powerful engines.
