We go back to 1953, in the month of September to be exact. Mercedes-Benz held a meeting, at which the participants talked about, among other things, a new model and how Mercedes could increase their sales in the American market. At that time, Mercedes had the 180 with four doors in production. The idea was to use this model as the basis for a convertible variant. Eéone particular participant at this meeting was anything but convinced. This was Hoffman, the Mercedes-Benz importer for the United States. He suggested using the 300 SL Gullwing as a basis, because he had a clear vision of the American public and their needs. If the new model was even close to this spectacular model, Mercedes might have a chance to increase their sales in the United States. We were unfortunately not at this meeting, but according to those in the know at the time, it was decided to present a prototype Mercedes-Benz roadster at the 1954 New York exhibition. Automotive journalists and other interested parties were full of praise for this prototype and this spurred Mercedes to proceed to production. In 1955, the 190 SL Roadster appeared at the Salon de Genève and the rest is more or less history. Not knowing, Mercedes had set the tone for their roadsters.
