Description

The 1968 Mercedes-Benz 200D belongs to the W110 series, often known in the Netherlands as the "kleine Heckflosse" or "Ponylucht." This generation debuted in the early 1960s as a more compact derivative of larger Mercedes models, filling the gap between entry-level models and heavier inline-six variants. The 200D was part of a series of diesel models that established Mercedes-Benz's position in the mid-size segment during this period.

Diesel technology was not yet widespread in passenger cars at the time, but Mercedes-Benz had gained early experience with durable compression-ignition engines through the 180D and its successors. The 200D built on this legacy, valued for its distinctive diesel engine in a market still dominated by gasoline engines. Within the W110 series, the 200D helped make diesel driving more accepted among private and business customers.

In 1968, the W110 was nearing the end of its production run, shortly before newer generations took over. The body style, with fin-like rear fenders, became a recognizable feature of Mercedes-Benz cars of that era, while the underlying technology remained conservative and practical. The 200D is associated with the transitional period between classic postwar Mercedes designs and the more streamlined models of the 1970s.

The Mercedes-Benz 200D is known for simple, robust engineering and a design focused on efficiency. Its diesel engine was a key feature, aligning with the car’s character as a prestigious yet practical sedan. Practicality and reliability took precedence over luxury or performance, and this model reflects that trend, further solidifying Mercedes-Benz’s reputation in diesel passenger cars.

This particular car is in running condition and was originally delivered new in the Netherlands. Extensive documentation is available. Both the interior and exterior are generally in good condition. The vehicle is exempt from road tax and the mandatory vehicle inspection (APK). Its provenance, documentation, and presentation make it a representative example of the Dutch-market version from its final production period.

The 1968 Mercedes-Benz 200D is a late model from the W110 generation, equipped with a diesel engine and originally delivered in the Netherlands. With extensive documentation, roadworthy condition, and a neat presentation of both interior and exterior, it is a characteristic example of Mercedes-Benz’s early diesel history. Viewing is recommended to get a full impression of the vehicle.
