Description

The 1978 Mercedes-Benz 200 is part of the W123 series, introduced in 1976 as the successor to the W114 and W115. The W123 became one of the most well-known Mercedes-Benz models of the 1970s and early 1980s, valued for its versatility, straightforward engineering, and long production run. The Mercedes-Benz 200 served as the entry-level gasoline model, featuring a four-cylinder inline engine designed for a broad audience that associated Mercedes-Benz with durable and solidly built passenger cars.

Launched during a period of focus on refinement, safety, and durability, the W123's body was developed with passive safety and stable handling in mind. Its powertrain and chassis were engineered for long-term use. The 200 was an important volume model alongside the more powerful six-cylinder variants and diesel versions, which gained popularity in many markets. The four-cylinder gasoline model offered an accessible option with traditional Mercedes-Benz characteristics.

The W123 was available in various body styles, including sedan, coupe, station wagon, and extended versions for specific markets. The 1978 Mercedes-Benz 200 is a sedan, the most recognized version. Over 2.7 million units of the W123 series were produced, making it one of the most-produced Mercedes-Benz passenger cars of its time. Its recognizable design, technical reliability, and range of variants have contributed to its enduring presence.

The Mercedes-Benz 200 features classic rear-wheel drive and a layout emphasizing mechanical simplicity and ease of maintenance. Known for its well-balanced suspension and functional interior layout, the 200 fits the series' approach. Although not currently roadworthy, it offers a solid starting point for restoration.

This car is a representative of the W123 series, holding an important place in Mercedes-Benz history. It is currently not roadworthy and is ideal for restoration. We recommend attending the viewing day to get a better understanding of the vehicle.
