Description

The Mercedes-Benz 200 GE belongs to the first generation of the Geländewagen, known internally as the W460. The G-Class was developed in the 1970s in collaboration with Steyr-Daimler-Puch and was launched in 1979 as an off-road vehicle with a focus on ruggedness, simplicity, and versatility. In the 1980s, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class evolved from a purely functional off-road vehicle into a model with broader versatility, without significantly altering its original angular design and ladder-frame chassis.

Technically, the Mercedes-Benz is recognizable by its simple construction and classic layout featuring rigid axles and a robust chassis. This made the model suitable for a wide range of applications, from heavy-duty off-road work to private use. The angular body and high seating position are characteristic of the first-generation G-Class and have remained part of the model’s identity.

The Mercedes-Benz 200 GE was specially developed for the Italian market in the late 1980s. At that time, engines with a displacement of 2 liters or more were subject to high tax rates in Italy. The 200 GE was also available in other European countries, but that was not part of Mercedes-Benz’s sales strategy. It was produced in relatively limited numbers compared to other W460 models, with Italy being the most important market. The focus was less on performance—though the 200 GE drives surprisingly smoothly—and more on reliability, ease of use, and versatility. This vehicle was delivered new in Genoa, Italy, in May 1987.

Having been delivered in Italy, this G-Class has benefited from a gentle climate that has helped preserve its chassis and body. It is in a beautiful, honest, original, and roadworthy condition. Both the interior and exterior are well-maintained. The car does not look like a battle-worn workhorse, which is sometimes seen in vehicles built for heavy-duty use.
