Description

The SL W113, better known as the Pagoda: you can only imagine having to follow it up. That task fell on the shoulders of the R107 series SL, which entered the market in 1971. However, Mercedes-Benz managed to achieve it and succeed in building one of the longest-running model series with the R107 SL. The model stayed in production for 18 years, with over 237,000 units produced. It’s no wonder the SL was such a great success; simply put, it was one of the best cars available at that time. The Mercedes-Benz SL R107 is perhaps one of the most versatile classics in existence. Sporty yet comfortable, solid yet full of character, a choice made with both mind and heart.

The first owner who received this 280 SL in 1981 opted for a fresh white exterior colour and combined it with a dark brown leather interior. It’s a combination not often seen but suits the SL exceptionally well.

With a white body that has previously been treated to a very neat respray, the car immediately exudes elegance. Beautiful brightwork, clean wheels, and impeccable details complete the car’s exterior appearance. The interior is beautifully original, with a colour best described as “pure chocolate.” The seats are exceptionally comfortable and showcase a beautiful patina, not to be mistaken for wear and tear, but rather a testament to the passage of time. The dashboard and door panels have also been well-preserved and meticulously cared for. The gauges, controls, and details like air vents and buttons are all in excellent condition. In the centre, the gearstick of the automatic transmission is seated proudly on the centre console, which brings us to the car’s “technical” aspect.

The mechanical condition of this Sport Leicht (Sport Lightweight), as SL stands for, has been very well-maintained. The smoothly shifting automatic transmission and reassuring brakes allow you to fully enjoy and confidently utilize the 185 horsepower delivered by the 2,746cc six-cylinder engine. The maintenance has always been impeccably done, and it is evident that the car has never been tampered with. This is a highly enjoyable driving example without any issues, yet it retains the reliability and comfort for which the R107 is renowned. The 2.8-litre straight-six engine is a highly reliable power plant that offers ample power while maintaining reasonable fuel consumption and favourable maintenance costs.

This 280 SL comes with the necessary documentation. It is a car that you can effortlessly and worry-free take to southern destinations for a fantastic vacation, as well as for enjoyable sporty drives in your own surroundings. A true all-rounder, this well-maintained roadster.
