Description

The Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 4.5L represented the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz engineering for the American market in the early 1970s, combining renowned craftsmanship and understated luxury with sophisticated mechanicals and effortless performance of a large-displacement V-8. Introduced to the United States for 1972, the 4.5-liter V-8 expanded upon the highly regarded W109 300SEL platform, which had established itself as one of Mercedes-Benz's most advanced and desirable automobiles.

Distinguished by its long-wheelbase architecture, independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, exceptional construction, and standard air suspension, the 300SEL offered a level of ride quality and engineering sophistication rarely encountered in the luxury sedan market of its era. The W109 lineage began in 1965 as Mercedes-Benz's flagship luxury sedan, evolving from the W111/W112 "Fintail" generation with a more modern and restrained design by Friedrich Geiger. Unlike the coil-sprung W108 models, the W109 featured a 4-inch longer wheelbase and sophisticated self-leveling air suspension at all four corners, resulting in an exceptionally composed ride and a quiet, formal cabin.

Beneath the hood, the 300SEL was offered with a range of six-cylinder and V-8 engines, culminating in the 4.5-liter M117 V-8 that became the primary American-market powerplant from 1971. Equipped with Bosch electronic fuel injection and approximately 230 horsepower in U.S. specification, the 4.5-liter provided strong, smooth acceleration befitting the car's flagship status.

This 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 4.5L Sedan is finished in factory-correct Code 291 Dark Olive over a 250 Cognac Leather interior, presenting a handsome and period-correct color combination associated with Mercedes-Benz's understated luxury of the era. It was sold new to its original owner, Terry Pirius, a Northwest Airlines pilot based in Hudson, Wisconsin, and remained with him until 1978. At approximately 60,000 miles, it passed to its second owner in Dodge Center, Minnesota, where it continued to receive conscientious maintenance. Its maintenance log documents regular servicing at WIN Stephens Classic Cars, Inc. and Holzer's Imported Car Service, providing a detailed record of its early care.

In 2001, the Mercedes was acquired by its third and most recent owner, a family member, who retained it for the next 24 years. During this period, the car was preserved rather than cosmetically over-restored. It was repainted once in the distant past and now displays a pleasing driver-quality presentation with the natural patina expected of a well-used and well-maintained automobile of this age. The original Cognac leather interior exhibits mild fatigue consistent with its 54-year history and 101,133 miles of use. The air conditioning system has been converted to modern R134a refrigerant for improved serviceability.

Factory equipment includes the desirable automatic transmission, electric sliding sunroof, Behr air conditioning, two-tone horns, Becker Europa stereo with automatic antenna, green-tinted insulating glass, and factory whitewall tires. The car currently wears black-sidewall tires while maintaining the overall period-correct appearance of the original specification.

Upon arrival at the St. Louis Car Museum, this 300SEL received extensive mechanical recommissioning to address its sophisticated systems. The complete air suspension system was rebuilt, with all critical components sent to Mercedes-Benz air-suspension specialist 600 Air Suspension for overhaul and bench testing. New air bags were installed, and the front suspension received rebuilt and honed kingpins, new Fabi-Bilstein bushings, new front sway bar mounts and end links, and a new steering damper. Engine and transmission mounts were replaced, along with rear axle shaft bearings, seals, and axle bump stops.

The braking system was also addressed with rebuilt front calipers, new front and rear brake pads, new front rotors, turned rear rotors, and fresh brake fluid. Additional service included replacement exhaust gaskets, new spark plugs and ignition wires, valve cover gaskets, fuel pump and filter, engine oil and filter, and all drive belts. The automatic transmission was fully serviced with a new filter, pan gasket, shifter bushings, and fresh fluid. The cooling system was flushed, and a replacement hood insulation pad and new battery were installed. All recent service records are included.

Supporting its history is an impressive collection of original documentation, including the owner's manual, stamped service booklet, maintenance booklet, three build cards, factory metal owner identification tag, and original parts catalog. Combined with its long-term ownership and documented servicing, these materials provide a comprehensive record of this 300SEL's life from delivery to a Northwest Airlines pilot in Wisconsin through decades of family ownership.

With 101,133 miles from new, this 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 4.5L offers an appealing opportunity to acquire one of Mercedes-Benz's most technically sophisticated luxury sedans of the period. Its honest driver-quality presentation, original interior, extensive documentation, factory equipment, and comprehensive recent mechanical service make it an excellent example of the W109's enduring reputation for engineering excellence, comfort, and longevity.
