The W126 debuted in 1979 and was the second generation to officially bear the S-Class name referring to Sonderklasse or 'special class'.
It was initially offered as a saloon car with straight-six, V8 and turbo diesel engines. In September 1981, a two-door Coupe © version of the W126 was introduced. Compared to its predecessor, the W126 was more aerodynamic, fuel efficient, capacious, and powerful. The model sported a new Mercedes-Benz design style which was subsequently used on other vehicles in the company's line-up. The W126 also included many Mercedes-Benz safety innovations.
The first airbag supplemental restraint systems, seatbelt pre-tensioners and traction control system were added to the car's specification.
