Description

Produced for only one year, the 1969 Cyclone CJ was Mercury's answer to the Plymouth Road Runner and Dodge Super Bee, not to mention its counterpart from Ford. It was a stripped down, performance-inspired Fastback model intended to attract horsepower junkies. They would be equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet as standard, along with dual exhaust, Competition Handling Package with heavy duty springs/shocks, blacked out grill treatment, engine dress-up kit, hood stripes, and Traction-Lok 9" rear axle. All other equipment features were left as optional.

Whisper-Aire air conditioning was only available on CJs with an automatic transmission and a 3.00:1 Traction-Lok rear axle. Drivers wanting a four-speed and higher axle ratios would need to find another way to keep cool in the summer months. Given a slight reduction in performance with the taller gears and automatic transmission, along with a cost of more than 10 percent of the base CJ price, it's no surprise that air conditioning ended up a rarely selected option. Only 2,175 Cyclone CJ's were produced that year, making them exceedingly rare to find today. Finding one with this long list of additional options is nearly impossible!

We are excited to offer this 1969 Mercury Cyclone CJ Fastback finished in factory code correct White over original Dark Red Vinyl interior. It comes with its appointed 428ci Cobra Jet V8 along with optional factory Air Ram Induction which includes forward hood pins, Whisper-Aire air conditioning, Select-Shift C6 automatic transmission, power front disc brakes, power steering, AM/FM Stereo radio with rear speakers; Sports Appearance Group to include color-keyed outside racing mirrors, driver side remote adjustment, bucket seats with center console; all tinted window glass, styled steel wheels, and dash tachometer! It was even originally equipped with very rare rocker panel moldings, that were not reinstalled after a recent repaint of the exterior.

Of the 2,175 produced, exactly 200 Cyclone CJ's were painted White, and 105 of those were fitted with a Dark Red vinyl bucket seat interior. When you factor in the list of impressive options that came on this car, we are extremely confident there is no other example like it! Built late in the 1969 production season, it was finalized at the Lorain, OH plant on June 17th,1969 and delivered new to its first owner on June 23rd,1969, indicating it was special ordered. The selling dealer was Willett Lincoln Lincoln-Mercury based in Decatur, Georgia where it started life in the dry southeast. It was most recently located in North Carolina with its former owner.

Upon arrival at the museum, it was thoroughly inspected and treated to a comprehensive service to include replacement of the gas tank, sending unit, filler hose, and mounting hardware; new front wheel bearings & seals; new brake rotors, rear shoes/drums/brake cylinders, along with a brake fluid flush; new spark plugs/wires, distributor cap, rotor, & condenser; new heater core, hoses, & new coolant in system; fresh engine oil/filter; rebuilt power steering cylinder with new hoses, idler arm bushing, upper control arms, lower ball joints, and tie rod ends; new air conditioning expansion valve and evaporator along with evacuating and charging the system with R134a refrigerant; replaced rear axle gear oil, and installed a new air cleaner. It already has a newer Holley 770cfm carburetor installed that has been properly tuned and is in excellent condition making this Cyclone Cobra Jet ready for proper use once again. The exhaust system and tires were replaced by the former owner in approximately 2023.

This very special 1969 Mercury Cyclone CJ Fastback is truly a one-of-one with this incredible list of factory options! A Deluxe Marti Report is proved with the car. It should easily prove to be a terrific muscle car investment and equally solid weekend driver! With only a partial restoration, it retains many original attributes, which support this CJ having a well-kept, garaged lifestyle since new. Please call with any questions or to discuss adding it to your own collection! Thanks for looking!
