Description

The MG F-Type Magna debuted in 1932 as a key model in MG’s early production lineup. With this model, MG introduced a six-cylinder engine for the first time, positioning the brand more firmly in the compact sports car segment. The F-Type Magna reflects the period in which MG built its reputation with lightweight, characterful sports cars that were technically simple yet purpose-built.

The F-Type Magna was available in several body styles and stood out for its long hood and slanted grille. This distinguished it from typical compact cars of its time. Thanks to its proportions and engineering, the model secured a place in pre-war sports car history early on. Its nickname, the “Little Blue Train,” refers to its resemblance to the famous Bentley, though it is not a direct derivative.

The 1,285 cc inline six-cylinder engine made the MG F-Type Magna a remarkable addition to MG’s lineup. This was a significant technical and commercial step for MG, offering a different character than the widely used four-cylinder engines of the period. The F-Type Magna occupied a distinctive position within the brand and the broader market of early sports cars.

This MG F-Type Magna Salonette is a rare variant. Approximately 390 new examples of this body style were produced, and fewer than 10 are known to exist today. According to the F-Type registry, this may be the oldest surviving Salonette in its original condition. It is a matching-numbers example, emphasizing its historical integrity.

The car has been fully restored in a period-correct color scheme and comes with an official Pass-out Voucher dated January 9, 1932, as well as an original MG Magna Motoring brochure. It is equipped with a smooth-running, high-torque inline-six engine paired with a competition-derived transmission. This combination defines the car’s character and aligns with the typical pre-war sports car experience.

The 1,285 cc engine produces a distinctive sound characteristic of the MG F-Type Magna, fitting its sporty nature. The Salonette also comes with a FIVA passport and is eligible to participate in a concours d’élégance. Within a collection, this model occupies a prominent place due to its rarity, documentation, and body style.

The 1932 MG F-Type Magna Salonette is a rare and historically significant vehicle within the early MG six-cylinder lineup. With its matching numbers, full restoration in period-correct paint, accompanying documentation, and FIVA passport, it represents an exceptional example of a pre-war sports car. Attending the viewing day is recommended to get a good impression of the lot.
