In 1996 imported from California and additionally equipped with the sought after wire wheels with a chrome trunk rack .Good running and driving car. The MGA was produced from 1955-1962. During that period, 101,081 were built. However, already in 1952 a prototype (EX175, registration number HM06) with TD mechanism, was shown to the then head of BMC, Leonard Lord. This prototype was largely based on UMG400, a TD special raced by George Philips at the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans. Lord rejected further developments, however, having chosen shortly beforehand to put the Austin-Healey 100 into production. This decision, incidentally, led to modernization of the TD, the development of the TF. But finally the time had come, at Le Mans in 1955 three MGA’s (aluminum prototypes, EX182) drove and a little later that year the first productions MGA’s appeared. With its low line and streamlined bodywork, the MGA differed greatly from its predecessors with their traditional square radiators, separate fenders and headlights, and square gasoline tank with spare wheel at the rear.The MGA, as it appeared in 1955, was a two-seat roadster with a 1489cc engine (XPEG series) mated to a four-speed transmission. With 72 HP at 5500 omx/min, top speed was just under 160 km/h. Drum brakes were fitted all around, while the car came standard on steel disc wheels. Central Locking wire-spoked wheels were an extra. In order to still be able to meet wishes of customers who wanted more power for their MGA, the MGA 1600 was introduced in May 1959. This had the 1558 cc engine of the Twin-Cam, but without the double overhead camshafts. In that form the engine produced 80 HP at 5600 rpm, allowing the MGA 1600 to cross the magic 100-mile limit (just). In order to safely use the greater power, disc brakes were fitted at the front Lockheed; drum brakes were retained at the rear. The 1600 was available in both coupé and roadster form. However, because the 1588 cc engine was not used anywhere else within BMC, construction of the MGA 1600 was discontinued in June 1961 on economic grounds. By then, 31,501 had been built. The successor turned out to be the MGA 1600 MKII. The only (technical) difference was the larger(1622 cc) engine that delivered 93 HP at 5500 rpm. The greater power mainly benefited acceleration. Until June 1962 the MGA 1600 MKII was available as coupé and roadster, during the period June 1962 to September 1962 only the roadster was still available. Then production of the MGA came to an end and the MG B was started. A total of 8,719 units of the 1600 MKII were built. Company information: Price changes, printing and misprints reserved.
