Description

Between 1909 and 1927, the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company built cars’s to the highest engineering and manufacturing standards of the time under the Paige brand name. The Paige-Detroit Motor Company also manufactured Paige trucks from 1918 to 1923 and small six-cylinder automobiles under the name Jewett from 1922 to 1926. Later the factory continued under the name Graham-Paige. This Paige was produced in late 1923, was first registered on Feb. 28, 2024, and is special for several reasons. It is the largest model Paige could provide: the 6-70 Sedan. Consequently, this one had a serious engine: a large 5.4-liter six-cylinder. Due to its capacity, this engine provided a lot of torque and, for that time, a generous engine output of 70hp. This makes the Paige today, in contrast to many other cars that have reached the age of 100 years, can also easily cope with today's traffic on, for example, provincial roads. In addition, this undeniably charismatic seven-passenger Paige-Detroit truly exudes authenticity. Engine, body and chassis are matching and, at over 100 years old, the Paige has never been restored. The body is for the most part still in its original paint. In places it has been touched up, but with the utmost care, in order to preserve the authentic look. Also note the interior, the headliner, the wood of the floorboards, the carpet, not to mention the ‘leatherette’ on the roof and running boards. The original brochure present shows that the Sedan comes standard with a fuel gauge, clock, front cigar lighter, sun visor, heater and exit light above the rear right running board. All of these are present on this Paige. There are also in the interior a smoker kit in the rear for the gentlemen and a ‘vanity kit’ for the ladies. The same brochure also mentions the De Luxe option package that was available for the 6-70. This car was equipped with these as icing on the cake: dual front and rear bumpers, a nickel-plated radiator topped with a Motometer brand temperature gauge, two spare wheels with covers on the front left and right, a rear luggage rack, automatic windshield wipers and a brake and tail light. The best is yet to come: this Paige is additionally equipped with a (still working) switchable compressor to inflate tires when one “would drive “flat”. The compressor is driven by the gearbox. A serious car so, that may also be because at the time it cost at the importer, the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Automobiel Mij in Rotterdam accessible via phone number 12916, 8,400, - guilders. Without options…In October 2008, a Dutchman bought the car in the U.S. from the owner who had owned the car since 1968. The Paige was registered in the Netherlands on May 11, 2011. Between 2008 and 2011, various maintenance work was performed on the car. For example, the car received new tires and the steel rims of the wheels were repainted in the original color. The original(!) wooden hearts of the wheels were treated with linseed oil for the sake of preserving originality. For the same reason, all the nickel work was also redone in England and by the company Genius of the Lamp, a costly exercise. When the car arrived in the Netherlands from the US, the exhaust had to be replaced, it was therefore exactly geïmited. The gasoline tank was ultrasonically cleaned and given a new coating. The alternator received a new back plate made of bronze, the old one was so bad that it was beyond repair. The radiator was disassembled and cleaned. The crankcase was disassembled and reassembled with a new gasket. The crankcase was immaculate, the bronze oil pump was like new. In addition, the car was fitted with ‘period-correct’ turn signals and the engine received a major service with new hoses, spark plugs, belt and battery. The original wiper motor was found to be defective; it was repaired and reinstalled on the car. When the car was purchased in the US, there was no trunk. The Dutch owner discovered an original trunk in the US, it is now on the car. Recently the car has had a small service. We love collectibles like this Paige Detroit: original cars in very good condition that are roadworthy.
