The Piaggio Ape, also known as a Vespacar or Ape (Italian for "bee," pronounced "ape"), is a lightweight, three-wheeled commercial vehicle. The Ape has been supplied by the Italian manufacturer Piaggio since 1948 and is primarily available here in single-seat (Ape 50) or double-seat (P2 or TM) versions.
In India and Mexico, Bajaj Auto produces Vespa cars under license. These are related to the tuk-tuk, which is used in Thailand, among other places.
Vespa/Piaggio also produces many more models, both with three and four wheels, usually with a two-stroke engine with fuel mixture. Diesel and electric versions are also available. The maximum (attainable) speed varies by model, but is generally around 50 to 60 km/h. The usual speed is approximately 25 to 45 km/h. The permitted speed also depends on the type of driver's license.
Most are intended for transporting small loads, but full-fledged mopeds are also produced.
