From the 1978 model year, the new SC was the entry model of the 911 range. It was actually a Carrera 3.0, known as the 911 S in the United States, with power reduced to 180 PS (178 hp; 132 kW) at 5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 27 kg-m (265 N-m; 195 lb-ft) at 4200 rpm.
Porsche reintroduced the "SC" designation for the first time since the 356 SC, as opposed to the racing-engined 356 Carrera. No Carrera versions were built, and the 930 Turbo remained at the top of the range. Engineers felt that the weight of the extra luxury, safety equipment and emissions of these cars were a drag on performance compared to earlier, lighter cars of the same power output, so on non-US models power was increased to 188 PS (185 hp; 138 kW) at 5,500 rpm in August 1980, and eventually to 204 PS (201 hp; 150 kW) at 5,900 rpm and peak torque of 267 Nm (197 lb-ft) at 4,300 rpm, which gave it a top speed of 235 km/h (146 mph) and a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 6.8 seconds
