Description

The introduction of the Porsche 930 Turbo in 1975 marked a pivotal moment in Porsche’s performance lineage and featured a completely reworked 3.0 Litre engine that laid the foundation for Porsche´s 911 engine development for many years to come.

The 3.3 Litre 930 Turbo introduced in 1978 as an upgrade to the first 3.0 Litre Turbo, brought significant refinements and a hike in power that would define the turbocharged 911 legacy.

To wear the Turbo badge on the rear deck became a badge of honour, not only did you drive a Porsche sportscar, you drove what the magazine Motor at the time hailed as the quickest production road car they had ever tested.

The 3.3 Litre Turbo engine featured a 3.3-liter flat-six engine with a K27 turbocharger and an intercooler, boosting output from 260 to 300 horsepower and 412 Nm (304 lb-ft) of torque. This upgrade significantly reduced turbo lag compared to the previous model and enhanced overall drivability.

Performance-wise, the 930 Turbo 3.3 could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 5 seconds, with a top speed around 257 km/h, impressive figures for its time. Power was delivered through a 4-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels. The brakes were also upgraded for the 3.3 Litre model, giving stopping power that matched the Turbo power output.

The iconic rear spoiler nicknamed the ‘tea-tray’ substituted the ‘whale tail’ spoiler for the 1978 model year. The spoiler wasn’t just for looks but provided crucial downforce while the heavily flared wheelarches helped to accommodate the wider rubber needed to transfer the power of the 3.3 Litre Turbo engine.

This matching numbers, German delivery Porsche 930 Turbo 3.3Litre was sold new in Frankfurt with Otto Glöckler Porsche. The accompanying service booklet gives us a full service history and for the first three years, Otto Glöckler Porsche had the pleasure of servicing the car. In 1983 at the 80.000km service interval, the 930 Turbo was serviced at ‘Auto Hero’ in nearby Schmelz.

In 1987/88 the Porsche relocated to Luxemburg where it stayed with the same owner until 2019 and was serviced at the correct intervals and at the same garage, ‘Garage Stamera’. There is a full recorded service history from 1691km to 169.246km in the accompanying ‘Pflegepass’.

The original delivery colour for this 930 Turbo was Grand Prix White and the car has since been professionally re-painted in Guards Red. The paint presents in very good condition throughout. The engine compartment is clean.

In recent years the front seat cushions were re-upholstered in the correct black leather while the rest of the cabin is original and very well kept. The large-diameter rev counter takes pride of place in the dashboard, giving you vital input as you thrust the Turbo forwards.

Today the 930 Turbo has 182.640km on the clock and has been maintained and used regularly by its enthusiastic owner in Denmark. An owner with a no-nonsense philosophy to his cars: they need to be in full working order at any time and if not, they are rectified immediately. As a result this Porsche 930 Turbo is a turn key example that will give its new owner immediate enjoyment.

With its aggressive stance, higher performance, and raw driving dynamics, the 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo 3.3 remains a benchmark in the evolution of turbocharged sports cars and a sought-after classic Porsche for enthusiasts and collectors today.
