Few automobiles have demonstrated the staying power of the Porsche 911. Introduced in 1964 as the successor to the 356, the 911 established a formula that would become one of the most enduring in automotive history: a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-six engine, unmistakable styling, exceptional balance, and a level of engineering that allowed the car to evolve continuously without sacrificing its identity. By the mid-1980s, the 911 had been refined through two decades of development, and the 1984–1989 Carrera-era cars are now widely regarded as some of the most desirable examples of Porsche's classic air-cooled lineage.
This 1986 Porsche 911 Targa Coupe represents that era particularly well, presented in an especially handsome special-order Prussian Blue Metallic over a linen leather interior. It was sold new by Norb Kornak Porsche-Audi in Aurora, Colorado, and is believed to have had just three owners from new. Most notably, it was acquired by its last owner in 1999 and remained under the care of this meticulous Porsche enthusiast for more than two decades. His appreciation for the marque was reflected in the way the car was maintained, with Storz Garage of Denver, Colorado, entrusted with its servicing throughout his ownership. Sadly, it is only following his recent passing that this cherished 911 has become available to its next caretaker.
For 1984, the Carrera name returned to the U.S. market, accompanied by the new 3.2-liter air-cooled flat-six engine featuring Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection. With approximately 207 horsepower in U.S. specification, the Carrera offered a compelling combination of performance, tractability, and everyday usability. The five-speed 915 transmission provided a direct mechanical connection, while the Targa roof offered the added pleasure of open-air motoring without sacrificing the character of the coupe.
This example is equipped from the factory with a leather-wrapped Sport Steering Wheel with raised hub, central locking system, forged light-alloy Fuchs wheels, automatic speed control, and an alarm system. Standard equipment included six-way power-adjustable seats, air conditioning, removable Targa roof panel, power windows, electrically heated rear window, fog lamps, carpeted floor mats bearing Porsche crests, and classic VDO instrumentation. The original Monterey radio has been replaced with an Alpine AM/FM/CD player, providing a more modern audio experience while preserving the car's original character.
During its long-term ownership, this 911 received substantial attention from Storz Garage, with particularly comprehensive work performed on its drivetrain. At 103,079 miles, the five-speed transmission was completely rebuilt with new synchronizer and dog rings, shift sleeves, needle bearings, gaskets, and related components. The flywheel was resurfaced, and the clutch assembly was renewed with a new clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and release bearing. A remanufactured starter was installed, and the engine compartment received new sound insulation upon reassembly.
At 105,253 miles, Storz Garage performed a comprehensive tune-up that included a valve adjustment, resurfacing of the valve covers with fresh gaskets, replacement of the fuel and air filters, and renewal of the oil-fed lines. This meticulous maintenance ensures the car's mechanical integrity and reliability.
Following its arrival at the St. Louis Car Museum & Sales, additional mechanical and safety-related work was completed to prepare the car for its next owner. All pushrod tubes and seals were replaced, ensuring the vehicle remains in excellent condition.
