A Porsche 911 cast in timeless black is basically not the most original appearance in sports car land. But add "4S" and "Targa" to this and it is a rare beauty in one fell swoop. Because the 997.2 Targa 4S, with its glass roof and thick chrome decorative strip above the far-reaching rear side windows, is the stylish brother of the Coupé.
The elegant touch really comes into its own in black! The perfect example of understated distinction. In addition, this copy comes from 2 private owners, excellent (mostly) dealer maintenance (complete history + appraisal report included) and extra luxurious. A gem!
Critics are sometimes surprised that the different generations of 911s are very similar. But you get that when a design turns out to be rock solid. The 997.2 is a prudent evolution of the 997 MK1 and a brilliant development from its earlier predecessors: the 996, 993, 964 and so on. An important difference with the two most recent predecessors is that the 997 as Targa does not lag behind the Coupé in terms of looks. The other 2 Targa's with a panoramic sliding roof seemed less powerful to me, while the models were a successful alternative with their characteristic roll bars.
The nice thing about this Targa 4S is that the black paint contrasts beautifully with the chrome above the side windows. This is an MK2, so that means LED lights in both the taillights and the units in the front bumper, directly below the round ones. The expanded wheel arches are well filled with spacers between the original double 5-spoke Porsche star design wheels. The red light bar that connects both taillights is typically 4S and the 4 exhaust tailpipes give this Elfer optical extra power.
The 911 Targa 4S is richly upholstered in black leather on the (optional!) 18-way adjustable comfort seats that can also be heated and have a ventilation function. The latter turns out not to be a superfluous luxury, because partly thanks to the Sport Chrono Plus package it sometimes goes "hot". You can also tick off things like navigation, iPod connection, parking sensors and rotating headlights.
Whoever pushes this 997 to the limit, immediately gets the stamp of a typical Porsche driver. Literally, because the headrests contain the legendary Porsche weapon. The Bose audio system sounds as good as the fact that uninvited guests are deterred with an SCM approved (December 4, 2019) alarm system including Track & Trace.
Speaking of good sound: the 3.8 liter 6-cylinder boxer engine (non-turbo!) Delivers 385 lively horsepower and sounds old-fashioned. The 997.2 propels up to 297 km / h and, in combination with PDK, takes no more than 4.7 seconds to reach 100 km / h from a standstill, with the roof closed or open!
