Description

History and Background

The Porsche 928 was introduced in the late 1970s as a fundamentally different model within the Porsche lineup. Whereas the brand had traditionally relied heavily on the rear-mounted boxer engine of the 911, the 928 opted for a front-mounted V8 and a transaxle layout. The engineering was aimed at achieving a different balance between performance, comfort, and handling. As a result, the Porsche 928 was not developed as a direct replacement for the 911, but as Porsche’s own interpretation of a fast gran turismo.

The model was positioned in the higher segment and was intended to compete with sporty luxury cars from Germany and Italy. The 928 quickly earned a reputation as a technically advanced Porsche, partly due to the combination of aluminum details, a streamlined body, and a chassis design that was considered modern at the time. Production of the 928 ultimately ran from 1977 to 1995, during which time various changes were made to the powertrain and equipment. The early years are significant for the 928 because the basic architecture was established during that period, and later versions built upon it.

The 1982 Porsche 928 falls within the model’s early production phase. By that stage, the 928 had established itself as a distinct model within the Porsche lineup, with a clear emphasis on long-distance capability and a different technical approach than the air-cooled sports cars with which the brand was primarily associated internationally. Partly because of this, the 928 has remained a standout model in Porsche’s history.

Features and Distinguishing Characteristics

The Porsche 928 differs fundamentally from many of its contemporaries due to the combination of a front-mounted eight-cylinder engine and a rear-mounted transmission, resulting in a transaxle configuration. This layout was intended to achieve a favorable weight distribution. The body shape of the Porsche 928 was also remarkably streamlined for its time and reflected the model’s technical ambition. The design was developed with an eye toward stability at higher speeds and suitability for long-distance driving.

For the 1982 model year, the Porsche 928 was in a phase where the early production run had already undergone some refinements compared to the initial launch version. Within the model series, this is a period in which the original technical principles are still clearly recognizable. The car is in running condition. As such, this 1982 Porsche 928 has been included in the auction lot as a running vehicle.

Summary

The 1982 Porsche 928 represents an important chapter in Porsche’s history as a technically unconventional grand tourer concept featuring a front-mounted V8 and transaxle layout. This is an early version from a model series that distinguished itself by carving out its own niche within the brand. The car is in running condition.
