John Tojeiro, an engineer and renowned chassis builder, stands as a lesser-known yet equally significant contributor to one of automotive history's most iconic vehicles—the AC Ace and, subsequently, the Shelby Cobra.
John Tojeiro was the visionary behind the design of the AC Ace Chassis. During that era, he specialized in crafting bespoke chassis, one of which was the remarkable Tojeiro Bristol, known as LOY500.
Cliff Davis, a London car dealer, commissioned LOY500 to complement his distinctive Tojeiro-built car, powered by a 1500cc MG engine, known as JOY500. LOY500's chassis was ingeniously combined with a robust 2-liter Bristol engine, transforming it into the renowned Tojeiro Bristol. The car achieved remarkable success and quickly gained widespread recognition. AC adopted the design, integrating it with their own engine to create the AC Ace.
LOY500 consistently secured victories in races, drawing the attention of Rolls Brothers, who approached Cliff Davis with an offer to purchase the car. Unfortunately, a subsequent road accident inflicted significant damage on LOY500.
Subsequently, replacement parts were procured from John Tojeiro to restore the car. Remarkably, the original damaged chassis of LOY500 is believed to have remained with the vehicle.
After some time, Cliff Davis reacquired LOY500 from Geoffrey Marsh of Marsh Plant. In a March 1972 article in Auto Enthusiast, a photograph captured the original LOY500 chassis leaning against a tree at the Marsh Plant business premises, accompanied by a set of axles and springs.
Davis retained LOY500 but later decided to sell the damaged chassis and its components to Mr. John Baker in 1982. This collection included the chassis, a disassembled engine and gearbox of unknown origin, suspension components, brakes, a set of Turner alloy wheels fitted with 1950s Continental 500/15 racing tires, and an intriguingly designed radiator. According to our sources, this Tojeiro Bristol 'kit' eventually evolved into the car we now offer for sale, identified as KOU406.
John Baker commenced the build immediately, though financial constraints posed challenges to the venture's success. Notably, as part of this process, Baker invited Tojeiro to inspect the chassis. It was confirmed that this was indeed an authentic 'Tojeiro' chassis, although Tojeiro couldn't recall which specific one it was at the time.
In 1987/8, the car was sold with an unfinished short-tail body to Mr. Kevin Webb and Mr. Barry Salmon. Subsequently, it was completed around 1992. During this phase, all suspension components and brakes underwent reconditioning and servicing. New leaf springs and a fresh wiring system, complete with the correct instruments, were meticulously installed.
Our client, the current owner, acquired KOU406 in 2015. Together with Steve Stanton, they dedicated several seasons to developing and racing the car, enhancing both its chassis and engine performance. They achieved one of the most powerful Bristol engines to date, producing 186 bhp. The car has been enthusiastically enjoyed by the duo at numerous competitive events, including participation in the Motor Racing Legends Woodcote trophy and AMOC, where it performed impressively in its class. It also made successful appearances at Silverstone Classic events.
Now, somewhat reluctantly, this exceptionally unique car is being offered for sale. It represents a rare opportunity to own a competitive driving experience and an enthralling piece of motorsport history.
