The car was designed and put into production in the 1930s. Its mass production started in 1945, after the end of World War II. The model then received the designation Volkswagen Type 1 and was sold as simply Volkswagen, meaning "car for the people". On the domestic market, the vehicle was nicknamed Käfer (beetle) and was later sold there under that name. In other countries, the designation Volkswagen Beetle was adopted. It was a pioneer in the budget vehicle segment, and also served as a benchmark in the development of American compacts.
The Beetle uses an air-cooled, rear-mounted boxer engine. The car is designed to carry four passengers on two rows of seats, has a luggage space under the front hood and behind the rear bench. The body is connected to the almost flat chassis by eighteen bolts. The design of both the front and rear suspension uses torsion bars and anti-roll bars to ensure the independence of each wheel in terms of shock absorption and suspension. Solutions such as mechanical drum brakes, split rear windows, mechanical turn signals and an unsynchronized gearbox were modernized over time. The remaining elements were used unchanged for the rest of the production.
The engine block, cylinder heads and gearbox housing are made of light alloys. The cylinders are made of cast iron. Oil cooler with thermostat ensures optimal operating temperature and high durability of the drive unit. The air entering the combustion chamber is cleaned by a metal air filter and an oil bath. Although the appearance of the car has changed slightly over the years, over 78,000 modifications were made throughout the model's production period.
