Description

This restored and sorted 1963 Karmann Ghia for sale currently resides as part of a private collection located in Lumberton, New Jersey, USA.

We purchased it after seeing it for sale in August 2024 at the New Hope Auto Show in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Most classic cars offered for sale are far from perfect. As lovely as this Karmann Ghia coupe is, it did have a few things we needed to address over the winter:

1. Removed the minor, non-structural rust in the rear seat floorboards and used steel patch panels to repair the area properly.

2. Replaced the rear swing axle’s badly cracked and leaking boots.

3. Replaced the leaking driver-side swing axle-to-brake drum seals.

4. Pulled the car’s 1500cc single-port engine and resealed it where necessary to minimize oil leaking when it was sitting.

5. Replaced the stock non-electronic distributor with a Pertronix “Flame Thrower” 009-Style electronic distributor.

6. Performed a complete tune-up, valve lash, and drum brake adjustment.

Some icons in classic cars have left an indelible mark on automotive history. The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia automobile is an iconic vehicle that continues to captivate enthusiasts and collectors alike. Volkswagen produced the Type 14 Karmann Ghia in coupe and convertible body styles from 1955 to 1974. Carrozzeria Ghia designed the body for Volkswagen. They used the frame of the common Type 1 Beetle. The Beetle has a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine. Volkswagen produced its high-volume Beetle in its Wolfsburg, Germany, production facility. Volkswagen decided to have Karmann make Karmann Ghia cars because they thought sales would be low.

The most recent owner of this 1963 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia car for sale purchased the car twelve years ago. Shortly after their purchase, they commissioned a restoration of the car that, up to that point, had spent most of its life in Georgia. The restoration relied on a bare metal car repainted in bright red with a contrasting white roof. The restoration used modern gray cloth upholstery instead of black vinyl. It features bright red piping for a stylish look. They upgraded the old AM radio. It now has new technology and includes an FM band. Passengers can enjoy listening to it through the modern dual cone speaker set into this Karmann Ghia’s dash space. They replaced the old 36-horsepower engine with a newer 1500cc one, which should produce about 50 horsepower. They also upgraded the electrical system of the Karmann Ghia to 12 volts.

The car now starts quickly, drives smoothly, and has a strong clutch for easy transmission engagement.

The prior owner for the past 12 years who had the car restored provided over 200 pictures of the car’s restoration that are available upon request. Originally a Georgia car.
