A set of new functions became available, including functional and non-functional air scoops, cable and pin hood tie-downs, and both wing and chin spoilers were made available to increase sales, and continue the winning formula of Mustang in nineteen sixty-nine (1969). Some performance packages were introduced that included the Mach 1, the Boss 302, and the Boss 429. Innovatively, the two boss models were designed to homologate the engines for racing. While the 1969 Mustang was supposed to be the last year for the GT option, it was rejuvenated on the third-generation Mustang for the 1982 Model.
They also sought to create the illusion that the cars were even larger. The 1971 Mustang was nearly three (3) inches wider than the 1970 model, and its front and rear track were also widened by three (3) inches. However, it has a nearly flat rear roofline and cramped interior with poor visibility for the driver earning it a reputation among the Sporting models.
The sales for the first generation Ford Mustang declined alongside the price. Lee Iacocca, the Ford president at that time wanted the new car to be smaller as the Mustang was becoming a medium-sized sedan. This made them return the Mustang car to its 1965 model year predecessor in size, shape, and overall styling.
In September 1973, the new model called the "Mustang II", was introduced before the 1973 oil crisis. Good enough, its reduced size allowed it to compete against successful imported sports coupes like the Japanese Datsun 240Z, Toyota Celicia, and the European Ford Capri. The new Mustang had two engine models available: an 88-horsepower 2.3-litre four-cylinder and the 105-horsepower, 2.8 litre V6 from the Mercury Capri. Few months after the Mustang II's hit the market fuel prices spiked and people began to opt for the smaller cars. This led to Ford producing 386,000 Ford Mustang II's for the next year, 1974 and by the fifth year of its production, it hit 1.1 million sales. All 302 equipped Mustang II's, except the King Cobra, received an updated version of the classic Ford "V8" emblem on each front fender. The car was available in hardtop coupe(1974), Cobra II (1976 and a revised version in 1977) King Cobra(1978), including a "luxury" Ghia Model (1975-1978).
From 1979 to 1986, the Ford Capri was produced as a Mercury badged version of the Mustang, using a few of its styling cues. The third-generation Mustang car had two different front-end styles. Between 1979 and 1986, the front end was angled back using four rectangular headlights, often called "four eyes". In the 1987 to 1993 model, the front end was restyled to reflect the contemporary, rounded off "aero" style of the Ford Taurus using flush composite headlamps and a smooth grille-less nose. Ford established a new division, the Special Vehicle Team(SVT) division and it debuted the 1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra and Cobra R were added as special, high-performance models that closed out the third generation of the Mustang.
The sixth-generation Mustang GT was unveiled on December 5, 2013. The new features included a widened body by 1.5 inches, 1.4 inches' lower body, trapezoidal grille, and a 2.75inch lower decklid, as well as new colours.
