Description

Land Rover Series 1 88" 4x2 Ex-Military 1958 Model in original condition. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally original and very rare 1958 Land Rover Series 1 88" 4x2. The vehicle on offer is the 179th 88" home market vehicle built in 1958. Only 655 of these Series 1s were made, and few survive, especially in 4x2 configuration. This particular vehicle still retains its original beam axle. The original military registration number was 03 CE 38.

These vehicles were supplied as part of a batch ordered by the War Office (Army) in 1958, intended for a vehicle standardization exercise that was later aborted. Only 655 were produced as soft tops, with around 10 supplied as hard tops. Rumor has it they were more expensive than their 4x4 counterparts, but the War Office was satisfied with them. They were likely used by non-frontline units such as driver training and military police. Vehicles in use at the time were typically kept in service for four years before disposal; the CT models served longer.

Most Mk.5 4x2 Rovers were produced around 1963, with many later transferred to the Ministry of Public Building and Works, and subsequently the Department of the Environment. Many ended up with London FUV registrations issued in blocks to the Ministry. This vehicle was registered on 24th May 1963. It has had only three previous keepers and has been in long-term ownership for most of its life.

Over the years, FUV has benefited from several upgrades, including the fitting of a Fairey overdrive, which improves drivability on dual carriageways, as well as indicators and rear bench seats in very nice original condition. The vehicle retains most of its original paintwork, with minor repairs to the tailgate and bulkhead. All galvanizing remains original and unmolested. The seats and canvas are also in keeping with the vehicle.

Recent recommissioning included overhauling all brakes, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and shoes. The fuel and ignition systems were replaced, and the engine received a light overhaul. It now runs and sounds as it should. The vehicle has had an easy life and has been well cared for by its previous owners. It is both tax and MOT exempt.

The Series 1 has been serviced and thoroughly checked at J A 4X4 of Cheshire Limited and is ready for its next owner to enjoy. Delivery is possible. With over 30 years as a Land Rover specialist, more photos and a walkaround video are available.
