motodrome offer for sale this rather wonderful 1997 Land Rover Defender 130 300TDi Pulse Ambulance, that has been really nicely converted into a proper overland camper by the team behind overlandcampers.co.uk.
‘Monty’, as he’s affectionately known, served with distinction as KZ 39 AA in the 2nd Gulf War as an ambulance, and was damaged by enemy fire. It was cast by the MOD in 2012, and overland campers embarked on a seven-year restoration to both bring it back to life, and convert it into a camper that could be used for hire, for those wishing to explore the great outdoors in the best vehicle possible.
Some of the battle damage was preserved for posterity, but was filled with clear gel. Monty is a true warrior and wears his battle scars with pride.
On the outside, the only real clues that Monty isn’t still an ambulance is the pop-up roof, the retractable ARB awning, and the door that’s been let into the nearside of the camper body.
Other external features include bonnet mounted spare wheel, sidesteps on both front doors, a retractable step for the side access door, and the correct heavy-duty wheels.
The drivers cab has 3 seats across the front, and there are two belted seats in the back, meaning it can legally carry 5 people.
However, it’s inside the camper body that the real fun starts. Overland Campers have a policy of fitting out all their Pulse Ambulance campers to the same configuration, and whilst this youtube video https://youtu.be/WtObC8yFxvs?si=gj1oH1Q0YVB048dt shows the inside of another of their fleet, Monty is basically the same.

Monty is powered by the venerable and totally dependable 300TDi engine, with R380 5-speed gearbox, power steering, and disc brakes all round.
Part of the rebuild following being savaged by the Iraqi’s included the fitting of a replacement dash and instruments. The used speedo that was fitted shows a mileage of 214000 miles. This is clearly incorrect – it’s most likely it had covered no more then 10000km (it would have had a KPH speedo fitted when with the MOD) when in MOD ownership.
You won’t find a better example on sale at the moment, and, if you’re thinking of a business opportunity, it’s done very well generating revenue thus far.
Driving-wise, Monty is absolutely on the button.
