Description

Land Rover Defender 110 V8 1990 “Lionheart” #440
This extremely rare example of a 110 V8 pickup was at built Land Rovers’ South African factory and one of the few models to offer Range Rover classic 3.5 auto performance with the rugged good looks of the Defender 110.
As rare as hen’s teeth and coming from a climate where vehicles suffer no corrosion, this is a must-have for any serious collector or aficionado.
Land Rover UK (then Leyland) pre-assembled vehicles and shipped them to the South Africa where they were assembled in one of two local factories. These vehicles are known as “Knock Downs” because of the flat pack way in which they were shipped from the Solihull factory. (Ikea hadn't yet popularised the term flat pack!)
Land Rover UK came to agreements with overseas territories or open their own companies to comply with import regulations and to benefit from lower assembly costs in these territories, such as South Africa and Australia. Variants were also produced in countries such as Belgium, Spain and South America.
The build quality was identical in terms of components, and indeed in some markets was better as they were equipped for the more rigorous conditions of the local market, with heavier duty chassis and more robust suspension.

This example was produced by Associated Automotive Distributors (PTY) Ltd, who were based in Blackheath, Cape Province, as can be seen from the chassis plate.

The truck is fitted with checker plate wing tops , checker plate steering guards and modesty panels, uprated suspension, Mud Terrain tyres on super-sized Alloy Rims.
It is fitted with an aftermarket stainless steel tailgate and a 50 mil ball to pack with seven pin wiring.
The motor is the Rover 3.5 litre gasoline / petrol twin SU carb mated to the 4-speed box, coupled to an LT230 transfer box, offering permanent 4 wheel drive with high and low ratios with front to rear diff locks, as could be found in the highly desirable Range Rover Classic of that era.
The vehicle drives smoothly yet with gusto, offering stunning acceleration with the satisfying sound of a gasoline V8
UK tax and duty paid and can be registered here in the UK or overseas.
