Description

Motodrome offer this very well-sorted 1957 Land Rover Series 1 88in soft top, in 7 seater spec.

Finished in well-patinated bronze green with a near new windowed green tilt, and fitted with the usual 3 seats in the cab, plus a pair of two man rear bench seats in the load area.

Fitted with a matching set of near new Deestone tyres in the correct 600x16 size, and the correct Series 1 2.0 petrol engine

At some point, probably when new, it belonged to Amersham Parish Council as their plaque is on the passenger seat box.

Acquired by the last owner in 2022, he quickly realised that it wasn’t quite as sound, and didn’t run as well as he’s been led to believe by the then vendor. Whilst it had (and retains) a very good bulkhead and front helf of the chassis, on investigation the rear chassis was beginning to resemble a swiss cheese, having had lots of badly-executed repairs over the years.

Hence he sent it to a well-respected (and well-known to us) Series Land Rover specialist in Oxfordshire for a massive amount of work, completed in early 2023, which included, but wasn’t limited to the following

Rear half chassis and crossmember removed and replaced with a new galvanised one, painted black.
New fuel tank
New shock absorbers and bushes all round
Electrical ancillaries sorted
All oils (engine, gearbox, transfer box, axles) and coolant replaced
Carburettor stripped and cleaned
4 new tyres
New stainless steel exhaust
New battery

After giving great service in Summer 2023, it returned to the same specialist with a further list of work, carried out in Autumn 2023, as follows

New dynamo
New electronic distributor
New coil
New thermostat and hoses

The bills for the above are in the history folder, together with pictures of the work carried out

I can confirm it now drives exactly as it should, with excellent steering (helped by being on the correct size tyres) and brakes. It starts on the button and performs very well indeed.

To sum up, it’s a very correct late Series 1 that’s patinated enough not to need treating with kid gloves, but can hold it’s head up anywhere. And get you there, and more importantly back, again.

On our own website, you’ll find our usual 2 videos: a walkaround appraisal, and driving impressions, which form part of the description.
