Presenting the brand new watch from Porsche Design manufactory - Porsche Design 911 Chronograph Timeless Machine Limited Edition.
The famous Porsche 911 car has been around since 1963. Even though the engineering solutions changed over the years, the overall look and fundamentals remained the same. Hence the Porsche Design branch follows the same philosophy for the watchmaking, despite that the generations of watches are much diverse than of cars.
Porsche Design strives to create a clearly recognizable family of watches. Just recently, the branch presented a brand new Porsche Design timepiece from a charming 8th generation of the 911 (992) generation - a Timeless Machine Chronograph.
In terms of design, the new watch is pretty straightforward. It has a sharp-lined 42 mm frame with open-worked lugs and an integrated leather strap. Powered by the Valjoux/ ETA 7750 mechanism, it satisfies the recipe for the classic Porsche Design’s craft.
Deliberately restricted design choices determine minimalist forms, a monochrome palette, and a few distinct, certain design elements. The timepiece also has few features borrowed from prior successful Porsche Design watches. In fact, the whole Timeless Machine Chronograph line is based on their first timepiece from 1972. The crafting method somewhat resembles the building of 911 racing car. Basically, it’s a tackle with already well-known, time-tested forms.
Timeless Machine watches are often appreciated by Porsche enthusiasts more than anyone else. In fact, the remaining majority tend to overlook them. The thing is, each and every watch from this series should be perceived as every new 911. The creation might look similar to the previous model until you take a closer look. Upon inspecting their design evolution, many end up falling in love with the tiny details.
Hence this first impression of seeing new Porsche Design creations is what makes the Porsche experience more intense. Because of it, many of their timepieces became cult classics overtime, partnering with numerous respected manufacturers (e.g., Ocean 2000 and IWC). The strong character and strict, yet simple forms are the indications of modern design fit for all.
For some, chronographs are the most favourite gadgets. We are not an exception. The second clock face (a new feature from Porsche Design - an extra hour and minute hands) helps to retain the overall proportions. However, for us, the latest Porsche Design work is much more interesting in terms of open mechanism. You can tell they put much effort into making a rotor unique to their refined style.
At first, it feels like inspecting a new 911: the look might be evident and familiar, but the engine compartment repeatedly intrigues the enthusiasts. Brand new watch purposefully follows the way of iconic Porsche design. Herewith, it becomes yet another piece of evolution, rather than revolution.
